  • Liverpool and Manchester City face each other this weekend in the Premier League
  • Legendary African footballers have graced this iconic fixture over the years
  • Egypt superstar Mohamed Salah will be in action for the Reds on Sunday at Anfield

Liverpool and Manchester City lock horns in a highly-anticipated encounter this weekend in the Premier League.

With the title race looking incredibly tight, this game will probably decide the colours of the ribbons in the Premier League title in May.

African footballers have decided this fixture in the last few years and will probably do so on Sunday, March 10, at Anfield.

The last time these two English giants met, they drew 1-1 at the Etihad in November, with Erling Haaland and Trent Alexander-Arnold getting the goals.

This time around, the stakes couldn't be higher. Liverpool are top of the table with 63 points, Man City are second with 62, while Arsenal are third with 61. Therefore, neither Liverpool nor Man City can afford to lose on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah, one of Africa's greatest players, is back from injury and will likely start. Sports Brief looks at other Africans who have played in this fixture.

Liverpool vs Man City: Greatest Africans

Honourable mentions: Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor, Bruce Grobbelaar, Wilfried Bony, Ali Benarbia.

5. Riyad Mahrez - Man City

The Algerian spent five seasons at Manchester City after helping Leicester City win that historic league title in 2016. The 2019 AFCON winner lifted four league titles with Pep Guardiola's side, including a historic treble last season. He scored 78 goals and 59 assists in 236 appearances at the club. In 16 matches against Liverpool, he scored once.

4. Sadio Mane - Liverpool

The Al Nassr star left has a legendary status at Anfield. His partnership with Mohamed Salah is one of the best in Premier League history. The Senegalese spent six seasons at Liverpool and won plenty of silverware. In 269 matches, he scored 120 goals. He was part of the team that won the 2020 league title and 2019 Champions League. Mane scored 10 goals in 21 appearances against Man City.

3. George Weah - Man City

Weah remains the only African to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or award. His time at Man City was brief. The three-time African Footballer of the Year joined the club when he was 34. He left the club after only three months. The AC Milan legend played seven games for the club and scored once.

2. Yaya Toure - Man City

Toure was a key player in Man City's first-ever Premier League title in 2012. The Ivorian joined the club in 2010 after a successful spell at Barcelona. He played eight seasons with Man City and won three league titles. He faced Liverpool 13 times and scored twice. The Ivorian is one of Africa's greatest players.

1. Mohamed Salah - Liverpool

Salah is arguably the best African player to play in the Premier League. His hat-trick against Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2021 saw him surpass Didier Drogba to become the top-scoring African in the league. The Egyptian has now scored 154 Premier League goals and will likely add to his tally in the next few seasons.

Salah has scored 11 goals against Man City in 20 appearances.

Salah vs Haaland record vs top six

Sports Brief earlier analysed Salah and Erling Haaland's record against the Premier League top six teams.

Salah has scored against every top six team. Despite playing in his second Premier League season, Haalasnd has scored against every top six side.
