  • Mamelodi Sundowns have gone a year and a half without losing in the DStv Premiership
  • Sead Ramovic is among the last coaches to bring defeat upon Rulani Mokwena's team
  • The two fiery coaches meet this week at Mbombela Stadium following weeks of niggle

Mamelodi Sundowns are looking like a team with few equals.

Going the season without a defeat is one of the many milestones in their sight, but football has a way of laying waste to such ambitions.

Earning an 'Invincibles' tag will be a major notch on Rulani Mokwena's personal belt, but there are still a few who have memories of getting one over him in 90 minutes.

Sundowns lost just two games last season and three the campaign before, and Sports Brief looks at those last five teams to beat Masandawana in the league.

Mamelodi Sundowns' last 5 league defeats

1. SuperSport United

Gavin Hunt holds the prize for being the last South African to beat Rulani Mokwena and Mamelodi Sundowns in the league.

Matsatsantsa earned a 2-1 win on 2 September 2022 at Lucas Moripe Stadium. It has now been 18 months since they tasted league defeat, thanks to Thapelo Maseko and Bradley Grobler.

2. TS Galaxy

Sead Ramovic was the last DStv Premiership coach to beat Mamelodi Sundowns at home. He helped orchestrate a 1-0 win on August 10 2022, with Lefa Hlongwane hitting the hosts on the counter, as per IOL.

The Bosnian-German may have calmed tensions with Rulani Mokwena publically, but it will take the smallest of sparks to reignite the tension at Mbombela Stadium on Wednesday night.

3. Stellenbosch FC

Two weeks before the 2022 Nedbank Cup final and having already clinched the league title, Stellenbosch FC rocked Sundowns 3-0 in Pretoria on May 14.

The visitors only had four shots on goal, with Ashley du Preez's brace either side of Jayden Adams' strike, sealing an impressive 75% conversion rate.

4. Maritzburg United

Sundowns' first defeat of 2022 came at the hands of Maritzburg United on March 5 at the Harry Gwala Stadium. Peter Shalulile had given the visitors the lead before Bulelani Ndengane equalised just before half-time.

Themba Zwane had the opportunity to win the game with a penalty in the closing stages but Maritzburg 'keeper, Marcel Englehardt kept him out. The hosts would win their own injury-time penalty, which Amadou Soukouna converted to give them a 2-1 win.

5. AmaZulu FC

This was the penultimate match of 2021, and Usuthu earned a 1-0 win at Kings Park on December 20. Augustine Mulenga's 75th-minute strike earned the victory, not knowing it would only be repeated four more times in the coming 26 months.

Sundowns had 63% of the possession that day but the hosts carved more shots on target, five to Sundowns' four, as per TransferMarkt.

After completing 40 games unbeaten in their 3-0 win over AmaZulu last week, Soccer Laduma relayed Mokwena's sentiments, who said:

"I love this team and this group of players has a very special place in my heart."

Ramovic vs Mokwena feud

Sports Brief recently reported on Sead Ramovic's comments on Rulani Mokwena before their league clash.

The TS Galaxy boss chose not to escalate the tensions between him and his Mamelodi Sundowns counterpart.

The niggle between the two began when Ramovic accused Mokwena of showing enough respect to his rivals.
