  • Bayer Leverkusen went 10 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table
  • The win, coupled with Bayern Munich's league draw, extended their lead
  • Xabi Alonso and Leverkusen are a only couple of wins away from the title

Bayer Leverkusen can now dare to dream.

A few weeks ago, the narrative was that Xabi Alonso’s team was simply a placeholder thanks to their top-of-the-table status in the German top flight.

But with the season coming to its business end, Die Werkself are showing no signs of relenting in the pursuit of a maiden German league title.

Their latest result, a 2-0 win over FC Koln, served as a reminder that they are not only consistent but also one of the most difficult teams to beat in European football at the moment.

Leverkusen’s task on Sunday was made much easier after the home side’s player, Jan Thielmann, was shown a straight red card for a tackle on Granit Xhaka.

Jeremie Frimpong eventually opened the scoring in the 37th minute before Alex Grimaldo secured the win in the second half, per the Bundesliga website.

How many wins does Leverkusen need?

Bayern’s 2-2 draw against Freiburg on Friday, March 1 was another devastating blow to Thomas Tuchel’s title ambitions.

That draw, coupled with Leverkusen’s latest win, means the Bavarians are 10 points behind their title rivals.

With 10 games of the season to go, Leverkusen’s fate is in their own hands. As for Bayern, it will take something close to a miracle to overturn the points deficit, especially considering their recent results.

As cited on the Bundesliga website, Die Werkself's 10-point lead after 24 games means they just need to win seven of their remaining 11 games to be crowned German champions.

This is regardless of whether Bayern win all their remaining games or not.

Bayer Leverkusen’s remaining fixtures

It is not difficult to see Alonso’s side winning seven more league games, particularly because they are unbeaten in the league all season.

Their remaining league games are pretty favourable, since they already faced Bayern in the reverse fixture, beating the Bavarians 3-0 on February 10, per ESPN.

Tuchel’s parting shot to players

Still on the Bundesliga, Sports Brief reported on Thomas Tuchel’s parting shot to players amid reports of the manager's 'sabotage'.

He is set to leave Bayern at the end of the season, but he could depart sooner depending on their performance in the Champions League.

The Bavarians are not faring too well in the UEFA Champions League either, having lost 1-0 to SS Lazio in the first leg of the Round of 16.
