The Nigeria Football Federation has moved swiftly to appoint Augustine Eguavoen as the interim Super Eagles coach following the announcement of Jose Peseiro’s departure on Friday, February 1.

According to Soccernet, Eguavoen will take charge of the Three-time AFCON winners on an interim basis till a permanent solution is sorted out as the NFF begins their search for Peseiro’s permanent successor.

Following Gernot Rohr's departure, Eguavoen was also chosen as Nigeria's interim manager for the 2021 AFCON in December 2021, where he led the team to the Round of 16 before Tunisia knocked them out.

Until his recent appointment, the former Nigeria defender was serving as the Super Eagles Technical Director, and he is also touted as one of the leading candidates to take the job on a permanent basis.

Amuneke linked with Super Eagles job

Meanwhile, former Nigeria Under-17 manager Emmanuel Amuneke has been strongly linked to the vacant Super Eagles job following the exit of Portuguese manager Peseiro, Daily Post reports.

The former Barcelona winger, who led Nigeria to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2015, is among the leading candidates reportedly being considered for the role as the search for Peseiro’s successor kicked off.

Other coaches being rumoured for the Super Eagles job include ex-internationals Sunday Oliseh and Finidi George although the NFF are yet to disclose who their preferred candidate will be.

Nigerians bid Jose Peseiro farewell

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Nigerians have shared their thoughts online following the exit of Portuguese manager Peseiro as Super Eagles coach after only just leading Nigeria to win the 2023 AFCON silver medal.

The 63-year-old tactician got a bitter-sweet farewell as some supporters were delighted with his exit from the national team while others felt a bit of remorse and sadness as they wanted him to continue.

Peseiro's contract as Super Eagles coach ended after the AFCON final, and he could not reach an agreement with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
