EPL top scorers 2023/24: Erling Haaland leads Golden Boot race as Salah keeps pace
FootballSerie A Top Scorers as Victor Osimhen Climbs to Fourth After Sassuolo Hat Trick
- Victor Osimhen scored a hat-trick against Sassuolo on Wednesday
- His treble of goals took him to 11 in the Italian Serie A this season
- Three other Serie A players have scored more than the 25-year-old
The race for the Golden Boot in the Serie A is almost non-existent, as one player stands above the rest thanks to his prowess in front of goal this season.
Last season’s top scorer, Victor Osimhen, is having a fairly tame season in 2023/24, which is reflective of how his team, Napoli, is also performing.
Gli Azzurri will certainly not win the title this year, while their ambitions for European football are also in jeopardy, with the club languishing in ninth place, eight points off a top-four spot.
Like his team, Osimhen will also need a miracle to secure the Italian league's Golden Boot, like he did last season with his 26-goal haul.

Serie A top scorers
Once again, it looks like the Serie A top scorer will come from the title-winning team.
Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez has been in frightening form this season, managing 23 league goals in 24 appearances, as per Transfermarkt.
His latest strike came in the Nerazzuri’s 4-0 win over Atalanta on Wednesday as Simeone Inzaghi maintained their 12-point lead at the summit.
Martinez’s closest rival is Juventus star, Dusan Vlahovic, who has 15 goals in 23 Serie A games.
Former Arsenal star, Olivier Giroud, is third in the race with 12 goals for AC Milan as he continues to defy his age.
Thanks to his hat trick against Sassuolo, Osimhen climbed the charts as he hit double figures, and he is joint-fourth alongside Roma’s Paulo Dybala, who also netted a hat-trick recently.
Here are the top 10 scorers in the Serie A so far this season after 26 games:
5 Greatest Nigerians to Play in Serie A, From Victor Osimhen to Taribo West
FootballPlayer | Goals | Games played |
Lautaro Martinez, Inter Milan | 23 | 24 |
Dusan Vlahovic, Juventus | 15 | 23 |
Olivier Giroud, AC Milan | 12 | 23 |
Paulo Dybala, Roma | 11 | 18 |
Victor Osimhen, Napoli | 11 | 15 |
Marcus Thuram, Inter Milan | 10 | 24 |
Matías Soulé, Frosinone | 10 | 24 |
Domenico Berardi, Sassuolo | 9 | 16 |
Hakan Çalhanoglu, Inter Milan | 9 | 23 |
Duvan Zapata, Torino/Atalanta | 9 | 25 |
It should be noted that there are other players tied on nine goals: Joshua Zirkzee (Bologna), Albert Gudmundsson (Genoa), Riccardo Orsolini (Bologna), and Romelu Lukaku (Roma).
They did not make the top 10 because Zapata has a better goals per 90 ratio.
Can Osimhen catch up?
Despite being 12 goals behind Martinez, it would be a mistake to overlook Osimhen’s goal-scoring capabilities.
Notably, the Nigerian has played just 15 times for his club as he missed more than four weeks while on international duty with the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Napoli get Victor Osimhen boost ahead of Champions League tie vs Barcelona
FootballThe 25-year-old has the third-best minutes-per-goal ratio, as he averages a goal every 105 minutes. Only Vlahovic (105 minutes) and Martinez (85 minutes) have better ratios, per the BBC.
Osimhen attempts to mend net
Sports Brief also recently reported on a curious incident on Wednesday where Osimhen tried to fix the opposition net not long before he scored into the same net.
With Napoli leading 2-1 against Sassuolo, he helped staff patch the net up alongside the opposing keeper, since they were two of the tallest players on the pitch.
