- Dani Alves’ football legacy has come under threat recently
- He has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison
- Reports claim his statue in Brazil has been vandalised
Former Barcelona star, Dani Alves’ legacy hit a new low after a statue in his hometown was reportedly vandalised, just days after his sentencing.
Alves, who is the second most decorated player in football history, was found guilty of violating a woman in a bathroom in Spain and sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
He was also ordered to pay the victim €150 000 and will be on probation for nine years. On top of this, Alves is not to contact or get close to the victim for at least 12 years.
The 40-year-old’s story is that of an individual who was once idolised by millions around the world becoming more popular for his misdeeds than his achievements on the pitch.

This was evident in his hometown of Juazeiro in Bahia, Brazil, where vandals made their feelings towards the former Barca player clear.
According to Football Espana, a statue of the footballer was defaced with white paint and other items including plastic bags.
Esporte further reports that sections of fans from Alves’ hometown have demanded the statue be taken down altogether.
Dani Alves' legacy sinking
This is the latest low Alves has hit since his sentencing.
Only days ago, it was reported that Barcelona had revoked the right-back’s legendary status from the club, and he is no longer available in the Catalan giants’ list of club legends.
La Blaugrana's pantheon of legends honours 102 players that have contributed to the success of the club over the years.
According to Marca, Barcelona later reinstated Alves in the legends’ list, possibly after backlash from the public.
