  • Mohamed Salah is set to return to first-team action at the end of February
  • The Egyptian missed the League Cup final against Chelsea through injury
  • Salah has featured in just one game since returning from the 2023 AFCON

Liverpool have received good news concerning the fitness of Mohamed Salah following the injury setback suffered by the Egyptian forward against Brentford.

The 31-year-old attacker was forced to miss Sunday's League Cup final against Chelsea due to muscle stiffness sustained while coming off the bench against the Bees in a Premier League game earlier this month.

According to The Standard, Salah is expected to return to Liverpool’s matchday squad on February 28 when the Reds take on Championship side Southampton in the FA Cup.

The Egyptian forward has been struggling with fitness issues since returning from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he picked up a hamstring injury that sidelined him for weeks.

After clinching the League Cup, Liverpool are pushing to win the treble this season as they currently top the Premier League and are considered one of the favourites to win the FA Cup.

Merson aims sly dig at Salah

Meanwhile, football analyst Paul Merson believes Jurgen Klopp is so vital to Liverpool that the Premier League club would rather lose Salah than the German manager, Sky Sports reports.

Klopp announced earlier this season he would be stepping down as manager at the end of the season, claiming he has run out of energy to manage the Reds after winning multiple titles since his arrival in 2015.

Klopp has led Liverpool to a Premier League title (in 2020), a Champions League (in 2019), an FA Cup (in 2022), two League Cup titles (in 2022 and 2024), a UEFA Super Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup (both in 2019).

Salah infuriated at Chelsea star

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Salah was seen remonstrating from the bench as Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo escaped punishment for injuring Liverpool teammate Ryan Gravenberch.

The Dutch midfielder needed to be stretchered off in the League Cup final victory against the Blues as Salah continued to look irate from the bench.

Virgil van Dijk would eventually seal victory for Liverpool, converting in the 118th minute to hand the Reds their first title of the season.
