  • The Super Eagles of Nigeria are preparing to take on Argentina’s La Albiceleste
  • Coach, Jose Peseiro, looks set to invite new players to the Nigerian team set-up
  • Sports Brief looks at the new players who could be called up for the Super Eagles

The Nigerian national team is poised to capitalise on their remarkable performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they secured the silver medal after a hard-fought battle against tournament hosts, Ivory Coast.

Coach, Jose Peseiro, has been unequivocal about his aspirations for the team, expressing his determination to restore Nigeria to its former glory as the dominant force in African football, despite looming uncertainty over his future.

In pursuit of this lofty objective, the Portuguese tactician has hinted at enlisting a cadre of talented Nigeria-eligible players to augment the West African team's existing strengths and propel them to successes on the continent.

Several players, including Napoli's Michael Folorunsho, have reportedly engaged in discussions with the Nigerian coach and may soon join the Super Eagles.

Against this backdrop, Sports Brief has examined the pool of Nigeria-eligible players who could feature in the international friendly against Argentina.

Players eligible to represent Nigeria

Michael Folorunsho

The 26-year-old is undoubtedly one of the most coveted football players on the international football scene. Born to Nigerian parents in Rome, the Napoli star is eligible to represent either the Super Eagles or Gli Azzurri.

Recently, Italy's coach, Luciano Spalletti, discussed the potential inclusion of this versatile midfielder in his squad for the March international window.

This development follows reports from OwnGoalNigeria indicating the midfield dynamo has been in discussion with Peseiro about his international allegiance.

Arthur Okonkwo

The 22-year-old looks poised to represent the Super Eagles, following reports of FIFA approving the goalkeeper’s nationality switch from England to Nigeria.

The Arsenal star, who is currently on loan at Wrexham, could feature for the Super Eagles as early as the next international window.

With Peseiro actively searching for competition for current first-choice keeper, Stanley Nwabali, a maiden call-up to the Super Eagles could be on the horizon for the Gunners loanee.

Gabriel Osho

The 25-year-old centre-back is also an option for the Super Eagles during the current international season.

The Luton Town defender has been a mainstay in the defence of the Hatters since their promotion to the Premier League.

The addition of Osho to the Nigerian team would offer valuable support to the likes of William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Semi Ajayi in defence.

Elijah Adebayo

The 26-year-old is another Nigeria-eligible talent making significant strides in European football. Having scored nine goals this season for Luton Town, the centre-forward stands out as one of the Premier League's most prolific players.

A recent report from Leadership News highlighted that the forward is keen on representing Nigeria. It remains to be seen if he will receive the call-up to join the Super Eagles.

Best African players in the Premier League

Sports Brief recently compiled a list of the top African players to have graced the Premier League after the comments of Yakubu Ayegbeki.

The Nigeria icon stirred up controversy recently after attributing Mohamed Salah's success to luck despite his success as a Liverpool player.
