Arsenal star Arthur Okonkwo is now eligible to play for the Super Eagles after FIFA reportedly approved his nationality switch from England to Nigeria.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper is currently on loan at the lower division side of Wrexham and could represent the Nigerian national team or the Olympic Eagles.

The former Sturm Graz goalkeeper was born in London to Nigerian parents but represented England at various youth levels, including the U-16, U-17, and U-18 teams.

Okonkwo's decision to join the Super Eagles follows the same pattern as that of Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, and Calvin Bassey, who also had the option of playing for the Three Lions.

According to a report by Soccernet, the Arsenal goalkeeper's stance will bring new competition to the national team, with Stanley Nwabali securing the number one spot at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigerians shared their thoughts on social media on the report.

"E don happen. Nwabali and the SE has opened the floodgates. AFCON is big now and coming in thick and fast next year. The World Cup is just 2 years away. Those in the diaspora who don't get in now will be the losers."

@10Qmedia said:

"I hope he is more confident and composed now. Those are the first attributes needed to be a Super Eagles goalkeeper."

The Luton Town stars were born to Nigerian parents and have yet to make an international appearance at any level.
