  • Victor Ikpeba wants Jose Peseiro to continue with the Super Eagles
  • The Portugal tactician guided Nigeria to the 2023 AFCON final
  • Peseiro’s current deal with the Super Eagles runs out at the end of February

Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has advocated for the Nigeria Football Federation to retain the services of Jose Peseiro following his exploits at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 63-year-old Portuguese tactician revived Nigerians' trust for him after leading the Super Eagles to the AFCON, losing narrowly to hosts Ivory Coast in a thrilling final.

According to The Nation, Ikpeba, who once starred for Ligue 1 giants Monaco, pleaded for Peseiro to continue as Nigeria’s coach, noting that the gaffer has earned the right to stay if he wants to.

“I must thumb up our boys. They have done well. We have to commend them and Peseiro. We have to let Super Eagles fans know that we are not sacking our manager except he wants to go. If he wants to stay, he should stay.”

Peseiro’s contract as Super Eagles coach comes to an end at the end of February, except the NFF begins a process of renewing his contract.

Algeria snubs interest in Peseiro

Meanwhile, Algeria's Football Association has decided not to continue negotiations with Jose Peseiro and will instead announce the appointment of Vladimir Petkovic as the next coach of the men's senior national team, Punch NG reports.

The Desert Foxes had pinned the Super Eagles coach as a potential candidate to replace Djamel Belmadi following his dismissal after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The imminent appointment of Petkovic as the new Algeria head coach will bring an end to speculation surrounding the future of Peseiro as Nigerians call for his contract with the Super Eagles to be extended.

Peseiro gives conditions for renewal

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Jose Peseiro has proposed three conditions to the Nigeria Football Federation if he is to remain as Super Eagles coach after his current contract expires at the end of February.

The NFF has begun contract talks with the current Super Eagles manager, with only a few days till his current contract expires.

The 63-year-old Portuguese coach, who took over in June 2022 after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, led Nigeria to win the silver medal in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
