  • Khanyisa Mayo is the leading goalscorer in the DStv Premiership this season
  • The Cape Town City FC striker has scored eight goals in 15 matches so far
  • The 25-year-old is chased by veteran Bradley Grobler and Lucas Ribeiro

The 2023/24 DStv Premiership Golden Boot race is heating up midway through the season.

Cape Town City FC star, Khanyisa Mayo, shared last season's award with Mamelodi Sundowns marksman, Peter Shalulile. Both strikers scored 12 goals.

This season, Mayo is top of the scoring charts halfway through the season, while the Namibian is still going through a difficult patch.

The 2023/24 DStv Premiership returned last weekend after the conclusion of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, in which South Africa finished third.

This season's Golden Boot looks like it will go down to the wire since four goals separate the leader and player in the 10th spot. Here are the top five front runners so far.

2023/24 DStv Premiership top scorers

Shalulile, the three-time Golden Boot winner, has scored four goals this season, and it seems like he will relinquish the title if his form in front of the goal doesn't improve drastically.

5. Chibuike Ohizu, Sekhukhune United (5)

The Nigerian, alongside Ashley Cupido of Cape Town Spurs, have scored five goals each. Ohizu has scored twice since August, while Cupido scored twice last weekend against AmaZulu to give Cape Town Spurs their second win in the PSL this season.

4. Iqraam Rayners, Stellenbosch (6)

Rayners, Tshegofatso Mabasa, who was on loan at Moroka Swallows for the first part of the season, and Augustine Chidi Kwem of AmaZulu FC all have scored six goals. Mabasa's last scored in September 2023, while Kwem's last found the net in late December last year.

3. Bradley Grobler, SuperSport United (7)

Grobler is SuperSport's all-time goalscorer and is closing in on the PSL's all-time scoring record currently held by Siyabonga Nomvethe, who scored 123 goals. The veteran centre-forward won the 2020/21 Golden Boot and has found the net seven times this season.

2. Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Mamelodi Sundowns (7)

The Sundowns star has seven goals in 11 appearances in the PSL this season. The Brazilian, playing his first season in the PSL, scored in the Tshwane Derby on November 29, where Sundowns beat SuperSport United 2-0. He has also scored against Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

1. Khanyisa Mayo, Cape Town City (8)

The 25-year-old wasn't on the plane to Ivory Coast for the 2023 AFCON despite enjoying a great season. He scored 12 goals last season and is on track to surpass that record. This season, he has bagged eight goals in 15 matches, despite a difficult start where he failed to score in City's first five league games.

Williams tops PSL clean sheets list

Sports Brief earlier reported on Ronwen Williams leading the league with the most clean sheets in the 2023/24 season.

The Sundowns star has kept nine clean sheets so far this season in 12 PSL matches. Williams also broke the clean sheet record last season.

Nigeria's Stanley Nwabali has seven clean sheets. Cape Town City veteran Darren Keet has eight clean sheets.
