  • Players have had their contracts terminated for bizarre reasons in the past
  • Recently a Besiktas player had his deal ripped up for being on a dating site
  • The club announced that the two parties parted ways by mutual consent

When it comes to strange contract terminations in football, nothing comes close to why Besiktas parted ways with their winger, Emirhan Delibaş.

A statement by the Turkish club released on Monday confirmed Delibaş’s contract had been terminated by mutual consent.

"We have parted ways with professional football player Emirhan Delibaş by mutual agreement. We wish Emirhan Delibaş success in his future career and present it to the public, the statement read.

According to t24.com, Besiktas decided to part ways with the player after his profile on the popular dating app Tinder went viral.

Other players who were sacked for odd reasons

Strangely enough, 21-year-old Delibaş is not the only player to see his contract ripped up for a weird reason.

Sports Brief takes a look at other players who were sacked by their clubs under strange circumstances.

1. Adil Rami

In 2019, Marseille reportedly sacked Adil Rami after the defender went for mud wrestling at a popular reality TV show whilst he reported to the club that he was injured.

This was just one of several sporadic tendencies by Rami, and Marseille had enough, eventually terminating his contract.

2. Sergi Guardiola

Before we go on, it is kind to note this player has no relation to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Despite being namesakes with a successful figure in football, Sergi is more popular for the manner in which he was sacked by Barcelona B in 2015 after tweets of him praising Real Madrid and insulting Catalonia were discovered.

3. Marcelo

Former Lyon defender Marcelo was reportedly dismissed by the club for inappropriate behaviour.

The 36-year-old left Lyon in 2021, and rumours emerged claiming his dismissal was because he was ‘passing gas’ and laughing about it in the dressing room.

Marcelo later denied the allegations on Twitter, according to Marca.

4. Nicolas Anelka

Former Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka was controversially sacked by West Brom in 2014 for what the club termed as ‘gross misconduct’.

At the time, Anelka, who was 35, was under fire for an anti-semantic goal celebration against West Ham.

He was effectively fined £80,000 by the Football Association and parted ways with West Brom after failing to settle his differences with the club over the incident, per BBC.

5. Jeffrey de Visscher

The former Aberdeen player was reportedly sacked after inappropriate behaviour during a wild night out.

6. Dennis Wise

Dennis Wise had a forgettable period with Leicester City, and his time with The Foxes ended on a sour note as the club terminated his contract for his altercation with a teammate.

Wise reportedly lost a card game during the 2002 pre-season tour and things escalated to the point where he punched teammate Callum Davidson in the face.

7. Adrian Mutu

In August 2023, Chelsea signed the Romanian wonder boy Adrian Mutu for £15.8 million.

But after one year with the Blues, the player got a seven-month ban after testing positive for a banned substance. Chelsea eventually decided to severe ties with him, citing ‘gross misconduct’ as the reason for the termination of his deal.

8. Patrice Evra

Anyone who knows Patrice Evra knows the Frenchman does not shy away from controversy.

In 2017, while representing Marseille, Evra Kung fu kicked one of his own fans after the fan allegedly insulted him.

He was subsequently banned from European competitions for seven months, and that marked the beginning of the end of his stint with the French club, who terminated his contract later on.

Marseille said in their statement that Evra “committed an irreparable act by responding to provocations from a handful of individuals."

9. Lee Clark

Lee Clark deserves recognition for managing to get sacked because an offensive shirt he wore went viral before the age of social media.

In 1999, Clark, a lifelong Toon fan and former Newcastle United player, thought it would be a good idea to wear a shirt bearing the message: ‘Sad Mackem (expletive) t-shirt during an FA Cup outing.

What made the moment more sensational was the fact that Clark played for Sunderland at the time. He was effectively dropped from the team and told he would never play for the Mackem side again.

Strange sports in the world today

In other news, Sports Brief also reported on some of the strange sports taking place in the world today.

Topping the list is Sepak Takraw which is basically a form of ‘kick volleyball’ and is very popular in Southeast Asia.
