- Broos said the Al-Ahly man should not be expected to decide games like Salah or Osimhen
Bafana Bafana head coach, Hugo Broos, has cautioned South African fans not to place unrealistic expectations on Percy Tau's shoulders.
Following the team's third-place finish in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 20023, Tau faced criticism from some supporters for his performance.
Broos acknowledged the forward's mixed showing, highlighting his crucial penalty miss against Mali and his goal-scoring contribution against Namibia.
In defence of the Al Ahly man, the Belgian manager stressed that while he is undoubtedly talented, he should not be expected to decide games like Salah or Osimhen single-handedly. Broos urged recognition of Tau's strengths without burdening him with unrealistic demands.

“Percy is a very good player. But all South Africans think he's a man who can decide the game. He cannot decide the game. When Percy plays with full confidence the level of the South African team is high because he's a good player. But he will not be the player who decides the game. He's, for example, not Salah from Egypt. He's not Osimhen from Nigeria. He's not that sort of player," Broos said, as quoted by Times Live.
Broos praised the player's impact on the team's performance but highlighted that his role is to enhance the team rather than serve as its saviour.
Despite criticism, Tau's talent has been recognized on the continental stage, winning the Interclub Player of the Year at the 2023 CAF Awards last year, as reported by KingFut. His stellar performances for the Egyptian giants, including top goal contributions in the CAF Champions League, solidified his reputation as a standout player.
