  • Luis Suarez looked genuinely shocked by his teammate's miss on Friday
  • Inter Miami faced Messi’s boyhood club Newell Old Boys in a friendly
  • The game ended in a 1-1 stalemate as Inter Miami’s preseason came to an end

Luis Suarez’s reaction to his Inter Miami teammate missing a gilt-edged chance against Newell Old Boys has gone viral.

After a brief stint with Gremio in the Brazilian top flight, Suarez reunited with his former teammate Lionel Messi at Inter Miami in 2024.

The duo are part of an ex-Barcelona States clique in the MLS side that also includes Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba and are hoping to help the team to domestic silverware ahead of the new season.

In their last preseason game, Inter Miami faced Newell Old Boys, a club famous for helping bring up eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi.

Suarez and Messi were given the nod to start, and the Uruguay international got first-hand experience of the gulf in quality between football in Europe and the United States.

With the scores deadlocked at 0-0, Inter Miami went forward in attack, and Messi fed a delightful ball to his teammate Diego Gomez.

But instead of guiding his shot on target, Gomez somehow placed his effort well over the bar, leaving Suarez sprawling onto the ground in disbelief, as seen in a video shared on social media by @InterMiaminews.

Perhaps Suarez’s frustration stemmed from envisioning himself in a similar position, where he would typically bury his effort into the net.

How the game went

After a tame first half, Inter Miami eventually took the lead through Shanyder Borgelin in the 64th minute, just moments after both Messi and Suarez were taken off, as reported by AS.

But a lapse at the back saw Newell Old Boys get an equaliser as Franco Diaz ran on goal to slot past Drake Callender.

Inter Miami will now start preparations for the new season, as they face Real Salt Lake in the MLS season opener in six days’ time.

Sports Brief also reported on a fascinating sight at the end of the Inter Miami versus Newell Old Boys game, as players of the Argentine club queued to have a photo taken with Lionel Messi.

Messi was a player in demand after the full-time whistle, as a video on X showed Newell players swarming the former Barcelona star, who was all too willing to pose for photos.
