  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang engraved his mark in the history of the Europa League
  • The former Arsenal striker has become the Europa League’s all-time top goalscorer
  • Aubameyang achieved the feat during Marseille’s 2-2 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has become the Europa League’s all-time top goalscorer, equalling the record set by former Monaco and Manchester United forward Radamel Falcao.

The former Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund forward scored the opening goal in Olympique Marseille's 2-2 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League play-offs on Thursday evening.

According to the Daily Post, Aubameyang has now scored 30 times in the Europa League for four different clubs in the competition during his illustrious career.

The former Gabonese international has achieved this feat across 54 appearances, scoring for Borussia Dortmund (8), Arsenal (14), Barcelona (2), and Marseille (6).

Aubameyang will hope to win the Europa League for the first time in his career this season although Marseille will need to ensure they do not lose the return leg against Shakhtar Donetsk in France to ensure they progress to the Round of 16.

Aubameyang rejuvenated at Marseille

Meanwhile, Aubameyang has enjoyed a comeback in form of sorts at Marseille after a turbulent few seasons, scoring 15 in 31 games so far in his maiden season for the Ligue 1 side following his troubled spell at English Premier League giants Chelsea last season, Metro UK reports.

In 2021, the forward was removed from his Arsenal captaincy following a disagreement with manager Mikel Arteta, and he later joined Barcelona following the cancellation of his contract with the Gunners.

Aubameyang joined Chelsea barely six months after his transfer to the Catalans, but his stint there was a catastrophe, with only three goals in 21 games.

Aubameyang silences critics with hattrick

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that former Arsenal striker, Aubameyang, proved to naysayers that he still has it by scoring a spectacular hat-trick, including an overhead kick.

Following an unsuccessful season at Chelsea, Aubameyang left the Premier League to join Ligue 1 giants Marseille.

His move to France at the age of 34 prompted detractors to say the Gabon international's career was nearly over.
