- The Orlando Pirates forward instrumental in South Africa’s AFCON 2023 journey
- Sekano believes the 23-year-old has the potential to thrive for country in future
Former Orlando Pirates midfield maestro, Steve Sekano, is confident that Evidence Makgopa possesses the potential to become one of South Africa's premier strikers.
Makgopa was handpicked by Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos, to spearhead the team's attacking endeavours in the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
His selection came after Burnley forward Lyle Foster's controversial omission and an injury sidelining Strasbourg's Lebogang Mothiba.
Makgopa showcased his prowess throughout the tournament, starting in all seven matches. He even contributed an assist in the team's resounding 4-0 victory over Namibia in Group E. He also netted a crucial goal in the Round of 16 upset against Morocco, as reported by EuroSport.

Sekano praised the 23-year-old's improvement, especially under the regular national team exposure. Despite his commendable performances, he highlighted areas of development, particularly his first touch and finishing ability.
"His turns and passes were superb and helpful. But my concern is about his first touch, he needs to work on his first touch. I think his lack of finishing and first touches are letting him down," he said, as reported by Goal.
However, Sekano remains optimistic about Makgopa's future, believing that he could stand among the country's top forwards with refinement.
Echoing Sekano's sentiments, coach Hugo Broos defended his decision to include the Pirates' forward in the AFCON 2023 squad, stressing the striker's potential to excel.
Makgopa's role in Bafana's upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria remains pivotal. With South Africa aiming to secure a direct qualification spot, his contributions could prove decisive.
