  • Victor Osimhen was not 100 percent fit for the AFCON 2023 final between Nigeria and Ivory Coast
  • Napoli have disclosed the health condition the Nigerian international played through in the final
  • The Super Eagles star is set to return to Italy after the conclusion of the continental football event

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, was part of the Nigerian squad that finished second at the just concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The Nigerian striker couldn't help his nation get past Ivory Coast in the final as the host nation claimed a deserving 2-1 win to lift the trophy on Sunday, February 11.

The 25-year-old was one of the stars to watch out for before the tournament started, but he couldn't perform to expectation and finished the competition with one goal and one assist in seven games.

Osimhen was reportedly admitted to the hospital before Nigeria's semi-final clash against South Africa but was later cleared to play the fixture.

According to a report by Italian media outlet The Republica, as per Owngoal Nigeria, Napoli have confirmed that their star player featured in the AFCON final with a stomach infection.

The Nigerian international was still able to play the entire duration of the final but couldn't stop the Elephants from winning.

"In the Ivory Coast, the number 9 [Victor Osimhen] was affected by an intestinal virus, which he should have left behind. But tomorrow's check-up will sweep away any residual doubts," the club said.
"The Azzurri urgently need their leader, and with him, they will be able to return to the past, concentrating permanently on a more offensive module."

Osimhen rallies around Alex Iwobi

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Osimhen rallying around Alex Iwobi after he was trolled and criticised on social media by some Nigerian football fans.

The former Arsenal star started six of Super Eagles' seven games in the competition and was one of the best performers in their superb run to the final.

The Fulham star wiped his Instagram account following relentless abuse on social media.
