  • Victor Osimhen failed to impress at the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations
  • The Nigerian striker only scored one goal and provided a lone assist in the competition
  • A Super Eagles legend has given his explanation for why the Napoli star did not excel

Nigeria striker, Victor Osimhen, was one of the players tipped to take the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by storm before the start of the competition but failed to meet the expectations.

The Napoli striker scored the Super Eagles' first goal in the tournament when they faced Equatorial Guinea but failed to add to his tally untill the end of the competition.

Osimhen had three goals chalked off by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the competition, but an assist in the second-round clash against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon was another positive for the Nigerian striker.

The reigning African Footballer of the Year failed to lead the Super Eagles to the title as Ivory Coast defeated Jose Peseiro's side 2-1 in the final.

The Napoli star has been criticised by many for his poor outing at the AFCON 2023, but Super Eagles legend, Emmanuel Amuneke, has come out to give his insight.

The former Barcelona winger claimed the football world didn't see the best of Osimhen at the tournament due to the role he played, according to a report by Soccernet.

"You know, in this Africa Cup of Nations, Osimhen spent a lot of time helping the team to defend. And when you have a striker that is so dangerous, moves a lot, and then at the end of the day, he is coming to defend, I think it reduces his quality.
"Osimhen is a player that, when you look at him, moves a lot and needs players that can actually, you know, give him those balls into spaces where he can become effective and useful," Amuneke continued.

Amuneke targets Super Eagles' job

Sports Brief also previously reported on Amuneke wanting to coach the Super Eagles if the position becomes available in the future.

Peseiro's future with the Nigerian national team is still uncertain and he could be axed despite Nigeria's second-place finish at AFCON 2023.
