He remains as popular as ever in the United States, however, with the Argentine star appearing in an ad for Michelob Ultra during Super Bowl 58 on Sunday.
The beer brand took advantage of the football icon's popularity in the USA, casting him in its latest commercial for one of the biggest sporting events of the year, the Super Bowl.
Messi appears in star-studded Michelob ad
The ad was packed with famous people as Messi was joined by Jason Sudeikis, the actor who plays the TV character Ted Lasso, and legendary Miami Dolphins quarterback, Dan Marino, per Sporting News.

The ad starts with the Inter Miami forward ordering a beer. The bartender informed the soccer legend that he would have to wait for his Michelob Ultra as the drink wasn't available at that time.
While waiting for his beer, the soccer star kills the time with a ball that happens to come his way. He dazzled with his dribbling skills before kicking the ball to Marino, who was in a boat.
The quarterback threw the ball back to Messi. Before he could hit the ball for a goal attempt, the bartender called him over to say that his order was ready.

The game itself lived up to the hype, with the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime.
