The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast treated fans to another nail-biting encounter when the Super Eagles of Nigeria faced off against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
The highly anticipated fixture did live up to the lofty expectations many had set for it, with both sides having little to call between them.
When the Super Eagles thought they had sealed certain victory following a counter-attacking goal from forward, Victor Osimhen, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) came to the party, overturning the goal and awarding a penalty to Bafana Bafana, which Teboho Mokoena would subsequently convert for the equaliser.
Both teams had little to separate them through extra time, and the game eventually went into penalties. Nigeria’s shot-stopper Stanley Nwabali would save two of the four spot kicks faced to seal a place for the three-time Cup of Nations winners in the final, in Abidjan.
