  • Stanley Nwabali was stretchered off during Nigeria's win over Cameroon at AFCON 2023
  • The Super Eagles are through to the quarter-final round of the competition in Ivory Coast
  • The Nigeria goalkeeper was injured following a collision during their knockout encounter

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali has opened up on the severity of the injury he suffered in Nigeria's 2-0 win against Cameroon.

Two goals from Ademola Lookman were enough as the West Africans defeated their rivals to set up a quarter-final clash with Angola.

The Atalanta forward opened the scoring in the 36th minute after Nigeria talisman, Victor Osimhen found him inside the opposing box.

The Indomitable Lions battled hard to restore parity, but the Nigerian defenders were resolute. Cameroon went all out in the second half and almost crowded the Super Eagles net.

Off a corner kick set piece, Nwabali then collided with Georges-Kevin N'Koudou and went down onto the turf, with the centre referee signalling to the medics for assistance.

After some treatment, the goalkeeper played for a few minutes more before the Nigeria technical crew was forced to replace him with Francis Uzoho in the 80th minute.

After the game, Nwabali told Sports Brief that the doctors would need to assess him:

"I feel great after tonight's performance. I was okay before this game, but it happened this way. I will be fine. I don't know, but I wish to come back. I still feel the pain."

It remains to be seen if Nwabali will be available for the Super Eagles' AFCON quarter-final clash with Angola on February 2.

Peseiro provides Nwabali's injury update

Sports Brief also previously reported that Super Eagles manager, Jose Peseiro gave an update on Nwabali ahead of Nigeria's quarter-final tie at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

He said claimed the medical team was yet to assess the extent of the injury. However, he hoped the Chippa United goalkeeper would feature for his nation in the quarter-finals.

Nigeria take on Angola this Friday for a place in the semi-finals of the continental tournament after outclassing their perennial rivals, Cameroon in their last 16 clash on Saturday.
