Last year, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena surprised many fans by saying he advises players to walk barefooted.

With the DStv Premiership on a break due to the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Mokwena disclosed why he likes walking barefoot.

Last year, he said he asked former Sundowns winger Cassius Mailula to walk barefoot amid his incredible run of form in the PSL, per Far Post. Some felt it was a bizarre routine.

South Africa are preparing for their eagerly anticipated showdown with Nigeria in the semi-final of the 2023 AFCON. Bafana Bafana posted photos of their players walking on the Stade de la Paix De Bouake turf, the venue of their game against Nigeria.

Two South Africa players, midfielder Teboho Mokoena and defender Grant Kekana, were seen walking barefoot. Both players are coached by Mokwena at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mokwena on walking barefooted

Mokwena posted a lengthy Tweet on X to explain the reasons why he advises players to walk barefooted.

"Walking barefoot, is also known as grounding or earthing, has been associated with several potential spiritual and physiological benefits."
"From a spiritual standpoint, walking barefoot can be seen as a way to connect with nature and the earth," he continued."
"Physiologically, proponents of grounding suggest that walking barefoot allows the body to absorb free electrons from the earth through the soles of the feet."

Mokwena has been Sundowns' coach for over a year and is considered one of the brightest young coaches in African football.

Mokwena visits Brazil

Sports Brief earlier reported on Mokwena taking a trip to Brazil during the break.

Mokwena visited top-flight league sides Botafogo and reigning Copa Libertadores champions Fluminense.

"Today’s visit is why I came to Brazil in the first place. Home of Relationism The talent is really scary. Thank you Flumiense," he wrote on X.
