  • The Cityzens are now two points behind Liverpool with a game in hand

Manchester City ace Phil Foden helped break a unique Premier League record with his treble of goals against Brentford on Monday, February 5.

The England international was in inspired form as he helped City come from behind to beat Thomas Frank’s men 3-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium.

In a game that saw Erling Haaland make a return from injury, the Norwegian had a relatively quiet outing and saw his side go behind courtesy of Neil Maupay, who ran onto a long goal kick to open the scoring.

City, who were beaten twice by Brentford last season, eventually saw their unrelenting attacks pay off as Foden equalised just before halftime.

That goal gave the defending champions momentum, with Foden grabbing his second goal eight minutes after the restart with a brilliantly guided header from Kevin de Bruyne’s cross.

Foden then sealed his hat-trick in style, playing a clever one-two with Erling Haaland before racing past the defenders to slot home.

Foden establishes unique Premier League record

Four goals in the Brentford vs Manchester City game rounded off what was a goal-filled weekend in the Premier League.

A total of 45 goals were scored, which is now the highest tally ever recorded in a single 10-game Premier League weekend.

The previous record was 44 goals, which was set in September 2020. That tally was equalled in May 2023, according to SportBible.

City climb to second

Meanwhile, as far as the title race is concerned, Manchester City now have the advantage as their win over Brentford took them to second on the log.

Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal left them on 51 points and in danger of losing their top-of-the-table status if City win their game in hand, as per the Premier League website.

The Gunners are in third place, level on points with Pep Guardiola’s side, but have played a game more.

Chelsea not planning to sack Pochettino

Still on Premier League news, Sports Brief reported on Chelsea’s immediate plans for Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine is coming under immense pressure at Stamford Bridge, and a 4-2 defeat to Wolves led to speculation that he was running on borrowed time.

But it has since been established that Chelsea are not planning on dismissing the former Tottenham boss just yet due to a number of factors.
