  • Sunday Oliseh has warned the Super Eagles to be at their best
  • Nigeria will tackle Bafana Bafana in the AFCON semi-final
  • The Super Eagles are bidding to win the AFCON for the fourth time

Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh wants the national team to get the job done against South Africa in 90 minutes and not drag their clash into penalty shootouts.

Nigeria, bidding to win the Africa Cup of Nations for the fourth time in their history, will tackle Bafana Bafana on Wednesday, February 7, in the semi-finals of the competition in Boauke, Ivory Coast.

Per Daily Post, Oliseh, who hailed South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams for his heroics against Cape Verde, urged the Super Eagles to avoid getting to penalties against Hugo Broos’ team.

“We should not allow the game to go to a penalty shootout because of the aura around the heroics of the goalkeeper. He saved four penalties, and the Super Eagles must have watched that.”

Bafana Bafana needed a penalty shootout victory to get past Cape Verde in the Afcon quarter-finals on Saturday, with goalkeeper Williams saving four spot-kicks in the shootout.

Hugo Broos plans Nigeria’s downfall

Meanwhile, Hugo Broos is banking on South Africa to end Nigeria’s race at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as both teams get set for their semi-final clash on Wednesday, February 7.

According to Complete Sports, Broos, who won the AFCON in 2019 with Cameroon, has expressed his desire to lead Bafana Bafana to their first final in 24 years, but first, they need to eliminate the Super Eagles.

South Africa’s last meeting with the Super Eagles at the AFCON semi-final ended in a 2-0 defeat for Bafana Bafana in the year 2000 edition hosted by Nigeria and Ghana.

Oliseh impressed with Nigeria’s success

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Sunday Oliseh hailed Nigeria’s compactness as the reason the Super Eagles have excelled at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The former Juventus midfielder disclosed that the Nigerian team has made it practically impossible for the opposition to attack them during games due to how compact they play.

Since the first match draw, the Super Eagles have displayed defensive resilience, keeping their opponents from creating scoring opportunities in all of their games.
