Former West Ham United defender Arthur Masuaku netted a brilliant freekick as DR Congo secured their first win at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and progressed to the semi-final.

The two-time champions defeated Guinea 3-1 in the second quarter-final at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium to book their place in the last four.

Guinea got off to a great start after Le Havre forward Mohamed Bayo converted from the spot on 20 minutes.

The Congolese responded before half-time through captain Chancel Mbemba, who fired home from a corner kick.

Brentford star Yoanne Wissa gave DR Congo the lead from the spot before Masuaku scored arguably the best goal of the tournament to seal victory.

In a video shared on social media, the Besiktas left-back teased the Guinean goalkeeper, who was expecting a cross by directing his freekick into the post.

DR Congo joined the Super Eagles of Nigeria as the two countries to reach the semi-finals of AFCON 2023.

They will now face the winner of the match between Maki and Ivory Coast in the semi-final.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Arthur Masuaku scored a vital goal as the Democratic Republic of Congo defeated Guinea 3-1 on Friday to reach the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

Masuaku netted direct from a free-kick on 82 minutes to give his country a two-goal advantage in the quarter-final and they will face hosts Ivory Coast or Mali for a place in the title decider.

Mohamed Bayo gave Guinea a 20th-minute lead from a penalty which was cancelled by DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba soon after in Abidjan.

Mpasi's smile before penaltyfree-kick goes viral

Sports Brief also reported that DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi gained the admiration of many on social media with his display of confidence during the AFCON round of 16 clash against Egypt.

The French-based goalkeeper was unfazed by the reputation of the seven-time champions as he produced a Man of the Match performance on Sunday.

Mpasi, who plays in Ligue 2 for Rodez, scored the winning penalty as DR Congo eliminated Egypt from the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire.
