  • Alex Iwobi has explained why Ahmed Musa is important to the Nigerian team at AFCON 2023
  • The ex-Arsenal midfielder also disclosed how the veteran has been helping them in Ivory Coast
  • Musa was part of the Super Eagles squad that won the competition in 2013 in South Africa

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has disclosed the impact of Ahmed Musa in the Nigerian team at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

A lot of Nigerian football fans criticised Jose Peseiro for including Musa in his final squad for the competition, but Iwobi has come out to back the team captain.

The former Leicester City forward is yet to feature in any of the Super Eagles games in the tournament, but he has been of importance to the team in Abidjan.

Speaking during the pre-match conference ahead of the quarter-final clash against Angola's Palancas Negras, Iwobi highlighted the importance of Musa in the team.

"He won the AFCON in 2013, so we had a discussion of what it did for Nigeria, the joy, the experience and Musa especially, as he's the captain, he always wants us to push on and to achieve that same thing," he said.
"Of course, back then, apparently, they weren't the favourites, but they focused on themselves. But then Musa told us that they didn't look at the outside noise, that it was one big family, and that's what pushed them to achieve greatness.
"So, he's creating the same environment now; everyone's hungry to fight for each other and fight for their family members.
"So, of course, you wanna have that same feeling, if not better feeling, this time around, but it starts with the quarter-final.
"We're gonna give up 100%. So, we give ourselves a chance to try and do that again."

The three-time champions will battle the Palancas Negras at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan today (February 2), according to Soccerway.

Iwobi speaks on his creativity

Sports Brief earlier reported on Iwobi responding to criticism over his inability to create enough chances for Super Eagles forwards at the ongoing AFCON.

The Fulham midfielder also took time out to explain his role in Jose Peseiro's squad.
