  • Senegal have been knocked out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by host nation Ivory Coast in the round of 16
  • The defending champions lost to the Elephants on penalties after playing out a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes duration
  • A Super Eagles legend has shared his thoughts on Ivory Coast's victory over one of the competition's favourites

The defending champions, Senegal, are out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after being defeated by the host nation Ivory Coast in the round of 16.

The Teranga Lions were tipped to win the competition after their blistering start in the group stage, which saw them clinch maximum points and concede only one goal.

The Elephants, on the other hand, had a contrasting campaign as they finished third in Group A after losing their last two group games against Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.

The match between the two African giants ended in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of play, but the hosts eventually won the tie 5-4 on penalties, with Franck Kessie scoring the decisive kick, according to a report by BBC.

After the game, Super Eagles legend Sunday Oliseh reacted to Ivory Coast's victory over the defending champions despite being the underdog ahead of the tie.

The Nigerian legendary midfielder took to his official page on X to share his thoughts about the game's outcome while claiming that the Elephants are now one of the favourites alongside Nigeria to win the competition.

"Change of Coach to a Local one four days ago & Cote d'Ivoire are, in my eyes, now, potential title contenders with Naija," he said.
"5 days ago, they were begging Morocco to beat Zambia to help them qualify; tonight, they eliminated Title Fav's, Senegal. Football is A fantastic, Crazy Rollercoaster."

The Elephants will face the winners between Mali and Burkina Faso in the competition's quarter-final.

Ronaldo Shows Interest in AFCON

Sports Brief earlier reported that Cristiano Ronaldo has shown interest in the Africa Cup of Nations after sharing a message with his Al-Nassr teammate Sadio Mane ahead of Senegal's clash with Ivory Coast.

The former Real Madrid star wished the Senegalese winger luck before their game against the host nation in the second round.
