  • The knockout round of the Africa Cup of Nations continues to take shape
  • The Super Eagles of Nigeria are among those through to the quarter-finals
  • Cameroon’s coach has picked a new title favourite after his side’s elimination

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) continues to deliver loads of thrills and excitement as the tournament gets to its business end.

A host of teams tipped to leave a mark on the showpiece have since faltered, leading many to choose new favourites to win the competition.

Among the latest to reconsider his pick to become the AFCON 2023 champion is Cameroon’s national team coach, Rigobert Song.

The 47-year-old who was almost boastful of his side’s ambition and capability to win the tournament before it kicked off, has made a surprise admission following his side’s elimination.

Cameroon coach picks AFCON favourite

The two-time AFCON winner, who took to the media following Cameroon's Round of 16 defeat, touched on the cause of their defeat to the Super Eagles.

As reported by Brila.net, he stated:

"Nigeria played a good game; they are a solid side, and they proved it against us. Congratulations to them."

In a clear adjustment of his perceived favourites to win the tournament, Song added:

"Nigeria are always favourites, and I think they have the quality to win the competition."

The Super Eagles, who started their AFCON campaign with an underwhelming draw against the Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea, have since picked up the pace with three consecutive victories, including wins against host nation, Ivory Coast.

Nigeria have also booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

Osimhen assures Nigerians of excitement

Sports Brief also previously reported on Victor Osimhen giving Nigeria fans his assurances of more excitement ahead of their crucial quarter-final showdown with Angola.

The 25-year-old was on hand to inspire Jose Peseiro’s team to victory against Cameroon, providing a crucial assist to see his country advance from the Round of 16 stage.

The marquee talisman has been instrumental to all of the Super Eagles' wins at the showpiece so far, although many have questioned Osimhen's lack of goals at AFCON.
