The capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, exploded in excitement as fans of the national team celebrated their AFCON victory over Egypt.

The two-time champions knocked Egypt out of the competition via a penalty shootout win in San Pedro on Sunday night.

Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi netted the winning penalty as the Leopards progressed to the quarter-final of the competition.

In videos shared on social media, supporters wildly celebrated the victory, setting up fireworks deep into the night.

Meanwhile, fans from Brazzaville also joined as they flooded the streets of Congo on their motorbikes and cars to celebrate with their neighbours.

Although Egypt were the overwhelming favourites going into the game, it was DR Congo who took the lead after Meschak Elia nodded home a Yoane Wissa cross.

The seven-time champions responded at the stroke of half-time through Mohamed Mostafa, who converted from the spot.

He, however, missed his penalty during the shootout but ex-West Ham United defender Arthur Masuaku also misplaced his kick to level the score.

Mpasi then turned into the hero of the game after converting his penalty after his opposite number Mohamed Abou Gabal blasted high.

DR Congo will next face Guinea for a place in the semi-final of the competition, as reported by Sky Sports.

Mpasi scores winning penalty for DR Congo

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi displayed confidence as he perfectly executed the winning penalty in the game against Egypt at the Nations Cup.

The French-based goalkeeper was unfazed by the reputation of the seven-time champions as he produced a Man of the Match performance on Sunday.

Mpasi, who plays in Ligue 2 for Rodez, scored the winning penalty as DR Congo eliminated Egypt from the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire.

Gabaski misses crucial penalty against DR Congo

Sports Brief also reported that goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal Gabaski missed his penalty as Egypt crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire.

The National Bank of Egypt shot-stopper is noted for his penalty-saving ability, having singlehandedly sent the seven-time champions to the final in Cameroon.

Gabaski appeared for the shootouts with his famous bottle but failed to make a single save as the Egyptians suffered a round of 16 elimination.
