FootballXavi Recreates Drogba’s Memorable “it’s a Disgrace” Moment vs Villareal
- Barcelona were beaten 5-3 by Villareal in a thriller on Saturday
- The Catalan giants’ coach Xavi was involved in a moment of madness
- Xavi announced he would leave Barcelona at the end of the season
Barcelona manager Xavi was involved in a brief moment of madness on Saturday, which summed up his current predicament at the Catalan club.
Xavi’s team suffered a spectacular collapse, losing 5-3 in a game which they were leading 3-2 going into the closing stages.
With the scores tied at 3-3, Barca thought they had been presented the chance to take the lead again as the referee pointed to the penalty spot after Villarreal's Santi Comesana was deemed to have handled the ball.
After a VAR review, however, the decision was overturned, and a disgruntled Xavi made his feelings clear.
A video going viral on social media shows an incensed Xavi turn to the camera and yell “It’s a disgrace” in protest of the decision to overturn Barcelona’s penalty.
It was quite uncharacteristic from Xavi, who is known to have a calm demeanour.
Interestingly, Xavi’s reaction was reminiscent of Didier Drogba’s furious rant in 2009 when Chelsea lost to Barcelona in the Champions League semis.
The Chelsea legend was left thoroughly frustrated by referee Tom Henning Ovrebo’s decisions and also yelled “It’s a disgrace” at TV cameras after the match, per Sports Illustrated.
Barca’s torrid season
By La Liga standards, Barcelona may well be out of the title race.
The defending champions are third on the log with 44 points, 10 behind league leaders Real Madrid with more than half the season gone.
The latest defeat to Villareal prompted Xavi to make a shock revelation as he confirmed he would leave Barcelona at the end of the season.
Xavi sends Barcelona fans urgent message after 4-1 mauling by Real Madrid
Football"I think the situation needs to change course, and as a culer [Barcelona fan], I cannot allow the current situation,” he said, per Sky Sports.
"And mostly as a cul, thinking about the club and about the players as well, I think they will feel more free, they will be calmer. I think we play with too much tension. It's for the benefit of the board, of the club. As a club person, I believe the best thing is to leave on June 30. Of course, I will give all I have in the four months that are left.
According to Xavi, he made the decision ‘several days ago’, but the defeat to Villareal paved the way for him to make the official announcement.
Xavi claims refs are favouring Real Madrid
On January 22, Xavi made headlines once again after suggesting referees were favouring title rivals Real Madrid.
As Sports Brief reported, The Spaniard was adamant Los Blancos won unfairly against Almeria, after their dramatic 3-2 win which piled more pressure on surprise contenders Girona.
