Andre Onana: Chronicling the crazy 24 hours for United goalie after missing Cameroon's AFCON opener
FootballAndre Onana: AFCON 2023 Statistics for Manchester United Goalkeeper As Cameroon Exits
- Andre Onana's AFCON 2023 campaign came to a bitter end on January 27
- Rigobert Song's Cameroon were knocked out by Nigeria in the round of 16
- Onana started only one game for his nation after arriving late from Manchester
Andre Onana will have a January to forget as his pathetic season continued following Cameroon's elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The five-time champions were beaten 2-0 by Nigeria in the round of 16 at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny on January 27, courtesy of a brace from Ademola Lookman.
Onana was reduced to a mere spectator after head coach Rigobert Song dropped him for the second successive game.
The Manchester United goalkeeper's tribulations began when he decided to remain in England until January 14, when they played Tottenham Hotspur. He flew out immediately after the game in a bid to arrive on time for Cameroon's opening game against Guinea on January 15.

Poor weather conditions, however, saw his journey to Ivory Coast derailed, with Song dropping him entirely from the matchday squad. They drew that game 1-1.
Onana was handed his first and only game, against the reigning champions, Senegal, four days later. The Teranga Lions outclassed their opponents, breezing to an easy 3-1 win.
Onana made no saves in that game, conceding from every shot he saved, including a late strike from Sadio Mane, which appeared to take forever before crossing the line into the bottom corner.
Song dropped him again for their do-or-die game against Gambia, where they grabbed a dramatic 3-2 win to finish as Group C's runners-up, earning them a date against Nigeria in the first knockout round.
His cousin, Fabrice Ondoa, was preferred in goal, leaving Onana's stats at AFCON 2023 to be one game, zero clean sheets, zero saves and three goals conceded as captured by Squawka.
