Nigeria's triumph over Cameroon at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny on Saturday, January 27, brought joy to Super Eagles winger Moses Simon.

Playing a pivotal role, Simon, who lasted almost the entire duration of the cagey affair, contributed to the West African powerhouse's 2-0 victory, securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2023 AFCON.

The decisive goals came courtesy of Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman, ending Cameroon's quest for a sixth AFCON crown.

This victory, achieved in the round of 16, holds special significance for Nigeria, who are three-time African champions, as it marks a form of revenge against the Indomitable Lions.

For context, Cameroon had defeated Nigeria 3-1 at the same venue 40 years ago in the final of the 1984 AFCON, clinching their first of five AFCON trophies.

Reflecting on the momentous win, Simon, in an interview with Sports Brief, highlighted the significance for the current generation of Super Eagles players who were not born during the 1984 encounter.

He also emphasised the team's ambitions as the tournament progresses.

"We feel very happy. I don't think most of us read history," the Nantes forward began.
"But the most important thing is to make Nigerians proud. Make our families proud, and make ourselves proud."

What's next for Simon and Nigeria?

Following their victory over the second-most successful nation in the ongoing AFCON, Simon and his teammates are set to face one of the competition's dark horses in Angola.

The quarterfinal clash between the Super Eagles and Palancras Negras is scheduled for February 2 at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny at 1700 hours GMT.

Osimhen receives praise from African legend

Meanwhile, Sports Brief also reported that Victor Osimhen is receiving praise for his valiant performance for Nigeria against Cameroon in the round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghanaian and African legend Asamoah Gyan was impressed by Osimhen's display and shared his admiration on social media, expressing his commendation for the forward.

Despite not getting on the scoresheet, Osimhen emerged victorious in six out of eleven ground duels and five out of seven aerial duels.

Additionally, he contributed with two clearances and one successful tackle, showcasing an impressive defensive performance as he was never dribbled past.
