  • Reigning African Best Victor Osimhen was everywhere and grabbed an assist
  • Ghanian legend Asamoah Gyan was impressed with the striker's passion

Victor Osimhen is earning plaudits for an all-round performance for Nigeria against Cameroon in round 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles faced eternal rivals, the Indomitable Lions and put up possibly their best performance of the tournament so far with a disciplined defensive display.

Osimhen showed his relentlessness in winning the ball off a Cameroonian defender and assisted Ademola Lookman for the first goal. The Atalanta striker also scored the second goal.

Asamoah Gyan praises Osimhen

Ghanaian legend Asamoah Gyan was impressed by the Napoli striker’s performance and could not keep it to himself, taking to social media to give the Nigerian his flowers.

“Osimhen plays with passion. That’s what every country wants their players to do,” he wrote.

Osimhen won six of his 11 ground duels and five of his seven aerial duels. He made two clearances and one tackle. He was never dribbled past.

Some of Gyan’s followers in the comments section took the post as a direct attack on the Black Stars of Ghana, who were eliminated in the group stage after two points.

Osimhen picked for random drug test

Following his exploits after the win over the Indomitable Lions, rumours went through social media claiming he was picked for a random doping test, which Nigerians made a joke of.

Per Soccernet, the test happened after Nigeria defeated Guinea Bissau 1-0, not after the knockout game.

The test, which is standard procedure, is conducted on players whose energy levels may raise suspicion of drug use. Captain William Troost-Ekong and winger Moses Simon are other Eagles to have undergone the test.

Osimhen has ‘voice’ injury

Sports Brief reported on Osimhen having a ‘voice’ injury after he helped Nigeria dispatch eternal rivals Cameroon in the round of 16 to set up a quarter-final date against Angola.

The Serie A striker, in the aftermath of the game, claimed to have suffered a voice injury after he was seen screaming at the top of his lungs with the fans in the stands.
