The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is now in the knockout stages, with the Super Eagles of Nigeria battling the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon for a place in the quarter-finals.

Nigeria was named one of the favourites to win the competition but started badly with a draw against Equatorial Guinea. However, two wins against Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau sealed a second-place finish for the Super Eagles.

On the contrary, Cameroon failed to win in their first two group games, but a hard-fought victory in their last match against the Gambia secured a second-place finish for the Indomitable Lions.

With the round of 16 ready to get started, Sports Brief takes a look at the preview and predictions of the clash between Nigeria and Cameroon.

Nigeria vs Cameroon - Preview

Nigeria finished behind Equatorial Guinea in the group phase but bettered Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau in standings.

The Super Eagles drew 1-1 against Nzalang Nacional before their 1-0 victories over the host nation, and the Djurtus earned them a place in the round of 16.

However, Cameroon finished the group stage behind the defending champion Senegal but topped Guinea and the Gambia.

The Indomitable Lions' only loss in the tournament came against the Teranga Lions, but their win over the Scorpions.

Nigeria vs Cameroon - Head-to-head

Nigeria and Cameroon have faced seven times in the African Cup of Nations history, with the Super Eagles being victorious on three occasions, while the Indomitable Lions also have the same number of wins.

The last game between both sides in AFCON was in 2019, with Nigeria claiming a 3-2 win over Cameroon in Egypt, according to Livescores.

Nigeria vs Cameroon - Predictions

A place in the last eight is up for grabs for both teams, and they've had their share of experience in the competition history.

The Super Eagles have a better team on paper, but the Indomitable Lions have proved they can't be pushed aside.

It will be a close tie, and the team that utilises their chances will eventually carry the day.

AFCON: Yobo not convinced with Super Eagles

Sports Brief earlier reported on former Nigerian international Joseph Yobo not being impressed with the Super Eagles' performance at the ongoing 2023 AFCON despite qualifying for the second round.

After Nigeria's win over Guinea-Bissau in their last group game, the AFCON 2013 winner claimed the team lacked togetherness.
