Jurgen Klopp has announced his decision to step down from the role as Liverpool manager at the end of the current season, providing his reason why.

The German, who took over the position in October 2015 with a contract initially set to run until 2026, achieved notable success during his tenure.

Klopp helped Liverpool secure the UEFA Champions League title in 2019 and guided the Reds to their first league title in 30 years during the 2019/20 season.

In a bombshell interview on Friday, the coach said he was 'running out of energy' to fulfil the role to the best of his ability, and firmly felt that resigning was the right decision to make.

Why Klopp is leaving Liverpool

The manager of the Reds, who communicated his decision to depart to club executives in November, remarked in a sit-down with transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano:

"I can understand that it's a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it - or at least try to explain it.
"It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now. Obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again."

How Liverpool are faring this season

According to the BBC, Liverpool are poised to secure a second league title this season, currently holding the top spot with a five-point lead over defending champions, Manchester City.

Additionally, the Reds are vying for victory in the Carabao Cup, having advanced to the final by defeating Fulham on aggregate in the semi-finals.

Klopp's team are set to face Chelsea at Wembley, and there is now extra motivation to clinch silverware in the German manager's farewell season.

Liverpool fans react to Klopp's announcement

Sports Brief also reported that Liverpool fans have expressed disbelief on social media at news that one of their most successful managers was leaving them.

Currently the longest-serving manager in the English top flight, Klopp made history by helping to end the Reds' 30-year wait for the Premier League trophy.
