Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has encouraged Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to visit Ivory Coast and cheer the team on to success in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles, bidding to win a fourth AFCON title, are set to face a crunch tie against eternal rivals Cameroon in the Round of 16 on Saturday, January 27, at the Stade Felix Houphouet, Abidjan.

During the Super Eagles' Zoom meeting with the Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh, Musa, speaking on behalf of the players, requested that the President come and watch the team live at the Stadium, Daily Post reports.

“We have a message that we are going to send to you [Enoh] to the President. We don’t want him to watch the game on TV anymore, we want him over here [Ivory Coast] to come and cheer us together. So this is our own message to the President.”

Nigeria, still unbeaten at the AFCON so far after two victories and a draw in the group stage, finished in second position in Group A with seven points behind leaders Equatorial Guinea.

Indomitable Lions land in Abidjan

Meanwhile, Cameroon arrived in Abidjan today, Thursday, January 25, as the Indomitable Lions prepare for their highly anticipated 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 match against the Super Eagles, Soccernet reports.

The two rivals, who have won a total of eight AFCON titles between them, will slug it out at the Stade Felix Houphouet for a place in the quarter-finals.

The Indomitable Lions and the Super Eagles booked their spots in the first knockout round after finishing as runners-up in Group A and Group C, respectively.

How Nigeria can win AFCON

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Guinea-Bissau’s coach Baciro Cande believes the Super Eagles of Nigeria have the quality to emerge as champions of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Several early favourites, including Algeria and Ghana, have struggled and been ousted from the competition, prompting fans and stakeholders to reevaluate their predictions for the probable AFCON winner in Ivory Coast.

Cande, who watched his squad get eliminated from the AFCON early after three defeats to the Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Nigeria, has labelled Nigeria as the favourite to win the competition.
