  • Russian oligarch, Roman Abramovich owned Chelsea for almost 20 years
  • Frank Lampard was both a player and manager under the former owner
  • The legend thinks the billionaire made some hasty decisions in his time

Roman Abramovich’s hiring and firing policy as Chelsea owner brought the club success, but a former player thinks the former owner could have done some things differently.

The Russian oligarch owned the club for 19 years after buying it from Ken Bates in 2003 before he was forced to sell it off to an American consortium led by Todd Boehly.

Under the Americans, the club's fortune has taken a downward trend, and they are on course for a second possible midtable finish in their first two years of ownership.

Per The Telegraph, the consortium has spent over £1 billion and signed 27 players, including £100mil-plus British record signings, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Lampard wished Abramovich acted differently

Frank Lampard played at Chelsea for 13 years, 11 of which were under the Russian billionaire and had many managers, including the Special One - Jose Mourinho.

Speaking on the Stick to Football Podcast, the Blues legend said he wished some things had been done differently by Abramovich, particularly regarding the top managers.

"I don’t know how much [things would have differed], if [Abramovich] stuck with Jose [Mourinho] through that [bad] patch and he’d stayed on."
"I know Jose’s history now looks like he moves on after a few years anyway, then Carlo [Ancelotti] left after two years - top managers."

The club's all-time top scorer was also a victim of the hiring and firing policy when he managed the club from July 2019 until his sacking in January 2021 after a poor run of results.

His successor, Thomas Tuchel, picked up the team from ninth place in the Premier League, securing them a top-four finish and winning the club's second UEFA Champions League title.

Chelsea risk points deduction

Sports Brief also previously reported on Chelsea risking a points deduction over alleged irregularities in their account books during the time of the former owner, Abramovich.

The Boehly consortium self-reported missing details in the club’s financial reports submitted to the Premier League between 2012 and 2019, including offshore payments.
