  • Chelsea could face sanctions from the Premier League after investigations into their financial irregularities
  • The incidents under investigation were done between 2012 and 2019 under former owner Roman Abramovich
  • UEFA recently fined the club for the same incident after new owners self-reported it

The new season is only days away from starting, and Chelsea have more problems on their hands after the Premier League launched investigations into their financial records.

The Todd Boehly-led consortium completed the club's takeover over a year ago after former owner Roman Abramovich was forced to sell after Russia invaded Ukraine and the UK government sanctioned him.

It has been a rollercoaster of a first year as owners, filled with colossal cash splashes and questionable decisions, culminating in the club's worst league position in 30 years.

There appears to be calmness financially after the club's sporting department worked tirelessly to correct the transfer errors of last summer's window and recouped over £200m from player sales.

Chelsea risk points deduction

Chelsea could be hit with a hefty fine or points deduction depending on the findings of the Premier League in their investigations into financial breaches by the club between 2012 and 2019.

According to The Times, payments, running into millions, were made into offshore accounts for players who were not registered in the club's account books submitted to UEFA, FA and the league board during that period.

It has also been traced to some agents and intermediaries, and despite happening years before the new owners came on board, the club will still attract sanctions.

As reported by Daily Star, UEFA fined the club £8.6m last month for the same incident, citing self-reporting and cooperation during the investigation as the reason for the low fine.

Nkunku's injury changes Chelsea's plans

Sports Brief reported that Chelsea could be forced into signing a new attacker after winger Christopher Nkunku was ruled out for almost four months after surgery for a knee injury.

Nkunku suffered the injury in the first 20 minutes of their final pre-season game in the United States against Borussia Dortmund and required an operation.

The club has five potential replacements, including former academy star Michael Olise, whom they have submitted an offer to Crystal Palace for.
