FootballJoseph Yobo: Ex Nigeria Captain Unconvinced With Super Eagles AFCON Title Chase
- Joseph Yobo says the Super Eagles still need cohesion
- Nigeria defeated Guinea-Bissau 1-0 in their final group game
- The victory sealed the Super Eagles' qualification to the Round of 16
Former Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo says the Super Eagles' performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has not been convincing despite the team sealing qualification to the Round of 16.
The three-time African champions remain undefeated after three group games, winning two and drawing one as they finished second in Group A behind Equatorial Guinea with seven points.
According to Daily Post, Yobo disclosed that the current Super Eagles team still needs cohesion after watching Nigeria’s 1-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau on Monday, January 22.
“It was not a convincing victory even though we got the deserved result we needed. The team still needs more cohesion because, from the midfield, we have yet to get it right.”
Nigeria, who reached a milestone by playing their 100th game at the AFCON, are bidding to win the competition for a fourth time after successes in 1980, 1994, and 2013.
Iwobi claims victory was difficult
Meanwhile, Alex Iwobi has admitted the Super Eagles' victory over Guinea-Bissau was difficult due to the changes made by the Wild Dogs in their final Group A encounter on Monday, January 22, All Nigeria Soccer reports.
Nigeria had to rely on an own goal from Opa Sangante in the first half to secure the maximum points against their West African neighbours as they sealed a spot in the Round of 16.
According to Iwobi, Guinea-Bissau went into the game believing they could beat the Super Eagles, which made the game more competitive.
