  • Arsenal have exacted their authority as dead-ball specialists in the Premier League
  • Two of their goals in their 5-0 rout against Crystal Palace came from corner kicks
  • We take a look at the number of set piece goals each club has scored this season

Prior to their game against Crystal Palace on January 20, Arsenal had gone on a winless spree of four games in all competitions.

In that time frame, they had only managed to find the back of the net two times, once at Anfield and once at Craven Cottage. Something needed to change for Mikel Arteta's side if they were to keep tabs with Liverpool at the top of the table.

After their warm weather training in Dubai, amid pressure for the club to sign a striker, the Gunners opted to rely on a tactic that has worked so well for them - set pieces.

Of the 42 goals they have scored this season, 12 have come from either freekicks or corners. Quick arithmetic shows that this points to an impressive percentage of 28.5%.

No other Premier League club has scored more.

Meet Arsenal set-piece coach, Nicolas Jover

Against Crystal Palace, their first two goals were from set pieces with Gabriel Magalhaes getting to the end of both, though the second one was given as a Dean Henderson own goal.

Arsenal's set piece coach, Nicolas Jover, is one of the best in the game, with the Athletic branding him a 'master of deception.'

Everton follow Arsenal closely with the Merseyside club scoring 11 goals from set pieces. Sean Dyche has often been accused of playing the traditional long balls and low blocks, which forces him to ensure that his set pieces are on point to maximise the few chances they create. Their 11 goals represent 46 per cent.

Manchester City currently sit fourth in the set-piece goals scored table, but with the return of Kevin De Bruyne, they might scale up the ladder quickly.

He returned to captain Brentford to a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, scoring a brilliant freekick of his won for the Bees' first goal.
