  • Emmanuel Adebayor has faulted Ghana players for playing without zeal against Mozambique
  • Ghana threw away a two-goal lead, leaving their chances of progression hanging by a thread
  • Chris Hughton's side remain hopeful of sneaking through as one of the best third-placed teams

Emmanuel Adebayor has criticised Ghana following their shambolic performance at the hands of Mozambique at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The Black Stars were in prime position to qualify from Group B as runners-up after Jordan Ayew had bagged a brace from the penalty spot.

Their tournament, however, crumbled after they allowed Mozambique back into the game in stoppage time. The Mambas scored twice in added time to force a 2-2 draw and relegate Ghana to third place with just two points.

Adebayor slams Black Stars

Adebayor, who was at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, tore into the West African giant's performance, claiming they played without motivation despite knowing what was on the line.

"I am disappointed. Coming into this game, they knew what they had to do. They knew it was a key game for the country, but how they played was unbelievable. They played with no envy, no motivation, no communication. It was as if they were just here for fun. It is completely wrong," he said in an interview with George Addo.

The Togolese legend went further to say that Chris Hughton's charges ought to go back home. The former Arsenal striker opined that even if they were to squeeze through, there's nothing tangible they would offer in the round of 16.

"I don't know what they want to do after this. The best place to go is back to Ghana so every player can return to his club. We do not see them doing anything. Let's put it into perspective: even if they qualify, what will they do? There is no point."

Ghana media clash with players

Sports Brief has also reported that Ghananian journalists in Abidjan clashed with the players following their disappointing performance against Mozambique.

The journalists attempted to conduct interviews in the mixed zone, but their efforts were met with resistance, leading to verbal confrontations.
