  • Ghana faced Mozambique in their final Africa Cup of Nations group fixture
  • The Black Stars were pegged back late in the game despite taking a 2-0 lead
  • A journalist criticised the players for their lacklustre performance during the tie

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast continues to shape up in ways that many did not anticipate.

While the tournament has exceeded expectations for some nations, such as Equatorial Guinea and Cape Verde, the same cannot be said for some of Africa's football powerhouses. One such team experiencing a disappointing AFCON journey is the Ghanaian national team.

The four-time Cup of Nations winner has continued its poor performance at the AFCON, making this competition one to forget. Their embarrassing loss in the opening match against Cape Verde's Blue Sharks was compounded by a lacklustre draw against Egypt in the second group game.

In their final match against Mozambique's Mambas, a victory was all that the team led by Chris Hughton needed to secure a spot in the knockout stage.

However, despite a promising start that saw them take a two-goal lead thanks to Jordan Ayew's brace, the Black Stars suffered a late setback as Geny Catamo and Reinildo Mandava scored two quick goals, levelling the playing scores against the run of play. The game ultimately ended in a draw, confirming Ghana's elimination from the competition.

However, the Ghanaian supporters and stakeholders are far from pleased with another underwhelming AFCON campaign and have not held back their disappointment with Hughton’s team.

Ghanaian Journalist Slams Black Stars

In a video posted on social media by @54footballx, renowned Ghanaian football expert, Nuhu Adams, expressed his frustration with the national team's performance and didn't hold back in criticising the players.

He emphasised the team's failure to secure a victory in the competition since their triumph at the 2019 edition in Egypt.

The sentiments of the well-known journalist reverberate throughout the sports community in Ghana, as additional footage has captured several other journalists airing their frustrations and many calling for the sack of the manager.

With their early exit from the tournament, the Black Stars are now without a group stage qualification since the 2017 edition held in Gabon.

Ivory Coast suffer AFCON defeat

Sports Brief in another report stressed that the host of the AFCON Ivory Coast suffered a disheartening defeat against Equatorial Guinea.

The two-time AFCON champions faced defeat in front of the 60,000-capacity crowd at the Stade Alassane Ouattara.

Competition’s topscorer, Emilio Nsue, scored a brace in addition to goals from Pablo Ganet and Jannick Buyla Sam.
