Jeff started in the sports media industry in the 1970s as a Middlesbrough reporter for Radio Tees. He moved from the northeast to the southeast in the 1980s, when he joined LBC Radio in London, before moving to BBC Radio 2 to cover the Olympics in Seoul and Los Angeles.

Before joining Sky in 1992, Stelling was a sports newsreader for TV-am, BSB, Eurosport, and Channel 4. He started hosting Sky's horse, greyhound, darts, and snooker races. Stelling was allowed to host Sports Saturday a few years after she started working for the company.

After four years, the show changed its name to Gillette Soccer Saturday. In its early years, Stelling oversaw coverage of every national match and featured Rodney Marsh, George Best, and Chris Kamara. In 2005, Stelling took over as host of Monday Night Football and in 2011, he succeeded Richard Keys as host of Sky's Champions League coverage. Stelling continued to lead Soccer Saturday.
