  • Bafana Bafana's crushing win over Namibia has given South Africa renewed AFCON hope
  • The AFCON 2023 squad has no Kaizer Chiefs players which is inadequate says a former player
  • The lack of representation is coupled with a trophy drought that is approaching its 10th season

As the standard bearers of South African football, Kaizer Chiefs' current situation is unacceptable.

This is the sentiment of a former Amakhosi and Bafana Bafana defender who understands the levels required for domestic success.

As Bafana Bafana inch toward the AFCON 2023 Round of 16, they do so without any Glamour Boys, a sore point for the club and their fans.

David Kannemeyer won the Premier Soccer League with three different clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs.

The defender is baffled as to how a club of that stature has been relegated to mere observers of success. Speaking to SoccerLaduma, he said:

"What happened to recruiting quality players who can bring value to the team? There really are bigger problems at Chiefs."

On the surface, Chiefs' trophy drought may not be as indicative of a structural collapse in the way their notoriously demanding fans may make out.

The PSL has essentially been monopolised by Mamelodi Sundowns and even Chiefs do not have the financial muscle to compete. Even then, they were runners-up in the league in 2020, finishing just two points off Masandawana.

In the trophyless decade, Chiefs lost four cup finals. They lost the 2015 Telkom Knockout final to Mamelodi Sundowns, the MTN8 final in 2016 to Ajax Cape Town and then were defeated by TS Galaxy in the 2019 Nedbank Cup final.

They are also the last South African team to have made the CAF Champions League final, losing to Al Ahly in 2021.

Chiefs' last shot at a trophy this season is the Nedbank Cup and they have received a favourable Round of 32 draw against a Motsepe Foundation Championship team for KZN, Milford FC.
