  • Cristiano Ronaldo 'influenced' an influx of European players to Saudi Arabia
  • Jordan Henderson was fed up of life in the country and returned to Europe
  • Another player has voiced out over the treatment of players in the Middle East

Former Manchester City Aymeric Laporte has voiced out over players’ welfare in Saudi Arabia following the influx of European stars into the country in the last one year.

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘inspired’ footballers from European leagues to the Saudi Pro League after joining Al-Nassr following the termination of his Manchester United contract.

Per Goal, Spanish defender Laporte joined the bandwagon when he signed for Al-Nassr for £23.5 million last summer, leaving the European treble winners.

Months into the moves, some players are already fed up with life in the Arabian country and are seeking a move away. Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has moved to Ajax.

Laporte queries players’ welfare

Laporte, six months since joining Al-Nassr, sat with Diario AS and spoke about his life in the country, lamenting how difficult it is to adapt.

“It's a big change compared to Europe, but in the end, it's all adaptation. They haven't made it easy for us,” he said.
“In fact, there are many players who are dissatisfied, but hey; We are working on it every day, negotiating, so to speak, and seeing if it improves a little because this is something new for them too.”

Henderson is the first of many players who want to leave. Karim Benzema and Roberto Firmino also want out but will unlikely leave until the summer.

He described it as a toy that, once you get it, you no longer take care of it.

“They take care of us, but not enough for my taste. That is to say, in Europe, they pay you a good salary, but they take better care of you,” he said.

The former Athletic Bilbao defender admitted it has yet to get to the stage he will want to leave but could get there in the future if things don't improve.

Henderson explains why he left Saudi Arabia

Sports Brief reported on Henderson explaining his decision to leave Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq after just six months with former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

Eredivisie club AFC Ajax offered a way out of the mess for Hendo, who claimed he was sad to be leaving the country, but he made a decision for his family.
