In the busy world of Kenyan football, one name stands out with an illustrious career spanning various clubs and leagues – Kenneth Muguna.

He has played for renowned clubs in Kenya, including Western Stima, Gor Mahia, FK Tirana in Albania and Azam FC in Tanzania.

He currently dons the colours of Kenya Police Football Club in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.

Muguna's journey into football started in his early years, inspired by his father's passion for the game. In an Exclusive interview with Sports Brief, Muguna revealed what made him fall in love with football.

“It was my dad. He used to watch a lot of football. Whenever he was in the house, I watched games with him. Then I started playing football back at home when I was young with other boys, and I just was good at it," Muguna shared.

The 28-year-old’s upward football curve began at Nyabondo High School in Sondu, Kenya. He highlighted the school's success in tournaments, which set the foundation for his journey.

He reminisced about the early days, saying,” I remember my first week in school. We had a tournament in Homa Bay (Home Bay Open), where we performed very well. That’s how we formed a strong side that went on to qualify for the provincial games for the first time in the school’s history."

His subsequent move to St Ignatius Magadi in Kisumu marked a crucial phase, with the school providing a nurturing environment and a talented team that won trophies.

Joining Gor Mahia: A Turning Point

In 2016, Muguna's career took a significant turn when he joined perennial Kenya champions Gor Mahia, which he describes as the best thing to happen to him in football.

Having spent a year with Western Stima and won the 2016 KPL Player of The Year, as reported by Michezo Afrika, he sought a bigger platform to showcase his talent, and K'Ogalo proved to be the perfect match.

“It was the best thing to happen to me in football. I spent one year in Western Stima and needed a bigger platform to showcase my talent in the country and outside. When that opportunity arrived, I did not even think twice. Gor and I were the perfect match in that period," he said.

The midfielder’s football odyssey extended to Tanzanian heavyweights Azam FC in July 2021.

Reflecting on his time with the club, he expressed deep admiration. His time there was particularly special, as he fulfilled a dream of playing for the club and made significant contributions despite not clinching any trophies during his two-year tenure

"Azam is a very important club for me. They have a big place in my heart. They have lovely staff good management and we did a lot of great things," Muguna explained.

Beyond the geographical borders, Muguna shared his perspective on the differences between Tanzanian and Kenyan football leagues. He acknowledged both leagues' greatness, stressing the need for Kenya to reclaim its strong football legacy.

Muguna attributed much of his success to the unwavering support of his parents and friends.

“Mt parents are very supportive. They are my number one fans. When things were not going well in my career, I always received calls from them. They encourage me. I talk a lot with my dad about my career. He follows every club that I played for. They have greatly impacted my career, and I owe my success to them.” Muguna said.

AFCON 2023 Predictions

Muguna remains focused on his aspirations, expressing a desire to play in top European leagues. His optimism and determination reflect his commitment to reaching new heights in his career.

Turning to the upcoming AFCON, he predicts an Egypt win in the final, citing the Pharaohs' hunger for redemption after falling short in the 2021 edition at the hands of Senegal, as reported by Goal.

“This is the only trophy missing for Mohamed Salah to be ranked above the great players who have played for Egypt before. He will come with 100% focus and drive the team towards winning the trophy. They know what made them fall short last time,” predicted Muguna.

When asked about the advice he would offer young, budding footballers, he stressed the importance of focus and surrounding oneself with the right individuals.

"Be focused and pray. Make sure you get advice from the right people so that you make it to any level you want to," he said.

As Kenya prepares to co-host the African Cup of Nations in 2027, Muguna remains hopeful and prayerful that he will be fit and ready to contribute to the national team's success if given the opportunity.
