  • Conor Gallagher is pivotal to Mauricio Pochettino’s system at Chelsea
  • The English midfielder helps the team press very high over the pitch
  • A former Blues believes otherwise and views Gallagher differently

Former Chelsea star, William Gallas is not a fan of Conor Gallagher and believes some other players would do better in the role he occupies in the team.

The midfielder has been a pivotal member of Mauricio Pochettino's setup since the Argentine took over at the club in the summer after a chaotic season last year.

The England international has mostly lined up in a three-man midfield alongside £100 million signees, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo in a 4-3-3 formation.

The primary issue arises when the team plays low blocks - teams that sit deep and defend - as the midfielder lacks the tools to break them down and create an opening for his team.

Gallas questions Gallagher's role at Chelsea

Gallas, who spent six years at Chelsea and won two Premier League titles, believes the academy star is limited and not at the level of Fernandez and Caicedo.

"Conor Gallagher is a great runner, but quality-wise, he isn’t the same as Enzo and Caicedo. He can help your team to press and press very high, but when he has the ball, his quality and technique is not number one," he told Gambling Zone.

Gallas believes the midfielder takes too much time taking extra touches and finding his teammates, and believes he should try more one-touch moves.

"I think it’s the opinion of many people that he slows Chelsea down a bit, and maybe they need to change their system in order to give the opportunity to another player as this system might not suit them."

The club are reportedly open to part ways with Gallagher if an offer in the region of £35-5mil arrives, but per Metro UK, the manager has consistently blocked his departure.

Gallagher assesses himself at Chelsea

Sports Brief previously reported on Gallagher assessing himself at Chelsea from the view of playing alongside two midfielders signed for league-record numbers.

The former Crystal Palace loanee claimed it shows his level if he lines up beside such quality players and believes he has what it takes to excel at Stamford Bridge.
