Jordan Henderson has opened up on why he quit Saudi Arabia six months into his time at Al-Ettifaq and returned to European football with AFC Ajax.
The England international hopped on the Saudi Arabia train, leaving Liverpool after 12 years and as the only captain to win it all at the Merseyside club.
In an interview with The Athletic, he claimed he moved to the Middle East because he wanted something that excites him in a new challenge, but the excitement soon faded.
He mutually terminated his contract with Ettifaq and returned to Europe with Ajax, where he signed a two-and-a-half-year contract till the summer of 2026.
Why Henderson left Saudi Arabia
After his move to the Eredivisie club was confirmed, he took to social media to express his thoughts on why he quit the fast-rising league after just six months.
“I’m sad to say that I will be leaving Al Ettifaq with immediate effect. It wasn’t an easy decision but one that I feel is best for me and my family.,” he wrote.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank the club & the fans for all the support during my time. I really felt the love from day one. I’ll keep watching & hoping for your success. Good luck for the future.”
Al Ettifaq president aims dig at Henderson
Per Mirror UK, Samer Al Misehal aimed a subtle dig at the former Liverpool captain in his parting note.
“There is a lot still to play for… the team performances required and expected by the club in the second half of the season under coach Steven Gerrard demand complete unity and commitment from all players and staff, and we look forward to regaining new momentum from this point forward through our winter training camp,” he said.
