  • The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations continues with match round two on the horizon
  • The Super Eagles of Nigeria are poised to clash against host nation Ivory Coast
  • The Ivory Coast manager provided his honest admission ahead of the meeting

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is poised to treat fans to another pulsating clash as competition hosts Ivory Coast take on West African giants, Nigeria.

The clash, which has been dubbed by many as the fixture of the tournament, is sure to leave many at the edge of their seats as a host of elite football stars, proudly representing their nations, will engage in a fierce battle to secure a crucial victory that could significantly influence the trajectory of both teams in the AFCON.

However, in the lead-up to the pulsating clash, Ivory Coast manager, Jean-Louis Gasset, has provided his honest take on the difficulties of facing Jose Peseiro’s team.

Ivory Coast coach on Super Eagles

During his final press conference before the upcoming match, the 70-year-old coach emphasised the strengths of the Super Eagles and the challenges associated with facing them.

"It's evident that, on paper, Nigeria possesses greater talent and a depth that could form several formidable teams, particularly with players like (Victor) Osimhen, who stands out as the star player of their team.
On our end, we have a squad that needs to elevate its level of play to deliver an outstanding performance against Nigeria."

The sentiments expressed by the experienced French tactician mirror the sentiments of many teams who have faced the Super Eagles in recent times.

Despite grappling with numerous injuries leading up to the tournament, Nigeria still boasts a wealth of talent, including players such as Fulham's Alex Iwobi, Atalanta's talisman Ademola Lookman, and OGC Nice forward Terrem Moffi, and Paul Onuachu, in addition to reigning CAF Africa Footballer of the Year, Osimhen.

Gasset, however, hopes his team can avoid defeat against the Super Eagles when they face off.

Super Eagles coach goes spiritual

Sports Brief in a previous report highlighted coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, had opted to go spiritual about his side’s chances of sealing a victory against Ivory Coast.

The 63-year-old echoed the words he stressed in the post-match conference of the draw against Equatorial Guinea, highlighting only God can give the Eagles victory on the night.
