FootballAndre Onana: Fans Pin Point Cameroon Goalie’s Key Weakness After Conceding Twice vs Tottenham
- Manchester United played out an entertaining 2-2 draw against Tottenham
- The two sides traded blows as Marcus Rashford also got onto the scoresheet
- United fans expressed concern over a key element of Andre Onana’s game
Manchester United fans have identified one aspect of Andre Onana’s game which the goalkeeper needs to improve.
Onana has not missed a single minute of action for United this season, playing all games across all competitions.
With so much action coming to him, it is no wonder that the 27-year-old consistently finds himself in the spotlight, especially when he makes a high-profile mistake.
Despite the commencement of the Africa Cup of Nations, Onana was allowed to delay his return to Africa for international duty as United came to an agreement with the Cameroonian FA.
Cameroon faces Guinea in their opener on January 15, though it is unlikely Onana will feature in that game which comes just hours after his club game against Tottenham.
Onana concedes twice vs Tottenham
On Sunday, January 14, United hosted Tottenham in the Premier League with the hopes of making strides in the Premier League standings.
It came as no surprise when Onana was in the starting XI in what was possibly his last game for the club for the next few weeks.
United took the lead through Rasmus Hojlund, whose fierce strike from inside the box proved too powerful for Spurs goalie Vicario.
Tottenham, however, found a way back into the game through a set piece as a brilliant delivery by Pedro Porro was met by Richarlison, who fliked it to the back of the net.
Fans instantly noted everything that led to the equalizer, as there appeared to be no one to mark Richarlison, while movement in the box from United players was poor.
But the spotlight shone brightest on Onana, who had the chance to make his presence felt by coming for the ball, but the Cameroon international stood his ground, and this was the case on several occasions during the game.
Andre Onana makes honest admission about his Man United career in interview
FootballOn social media, fans were quick to correct Onana, as they urged him to take a risk and come out for aerial balls.
"Onana better starts coming out for corners or we might as well bring De Gea back "
"Onana’s starting position from corners NEEDS addressing, it’s not good enough. Our set piece record as a whole is the worst I’ve seen in Europe."
"Why doesn't Onana come to catch the balls from corners?"
"Onana not coming to contest those corners is quite disappointing"
"Why is Onana always so deep for corners? Jesus Christ take a yard out!"
How the rest of the game went
As reported on BBC, United retook the lead through Marcus Rashford’s neatly placed finish in the 41st minute in what was the England international’s first Old Trafford goal since May 2023.
But Tottenham, who were missing several big names in the game, showed remarkable bravery and resilience, getting the equalizer just 50 seconds into the second half through Rodrigo Bentancur.
